What is Metabolic Testing?
Physiologic evaluations based on actual oxygen consumed and carbon dioxide produced for:

Resting Metabolic Rate
– a measurement of calories used to maintain basic life functions such as circulatory, respiratory and brain function. RMR typically accounts for 60-75% of total energy used in a healthy person.

Exercise Metabolic Rate – measurements used to determine the efficiency and types of fuels used (fats or sugars) during exercise.

Aerobic Base – a zone based on heart rate that tells you where you are most efficient at utilizing fat as an energy source.

Lactate Threshold (LT) – a marker that determines your maximal sustainable exercise intensity during which you burn fat and sugars. Beyond the LT, anaerobic metabolism begins to take over and glucose is predominately used as an energy source.

VO2 Max - the maximum volume of oxygen that the body can consume during intense, whole-body exercise, expressed as liters per minute (L/min) or milliliters per kg bodyweight per minute (ml/kg/min). This number is largely genetically predetermined.

Laboratory tests utilizing blood, urine and/or saliva to determine:
How your body produces and utilizes energy at a cellular level and factors and imbalances that influence energy metabolism.

What are the Benefits of Metabolic Testing?
Information obtained through metabolic testing enables us to design individualized programs to help optimize your health and performance.  Learning to exercise at an intensity relative to your metabolism determines the efficiency and effectiveness of your workouts and weight management program. When exercising too hard, your metabolism uses primarily sugars which can leave you feeling hungry, tired and sore afterwards. Too low of an exercise intensity doesn't challenge your metabolism to reach optimal levels and diminishes fitness improvements and weight goals.

So how does massage therapy differ from the basic massage?
The short answer is better results for you. While the most common benefit of a massage is the deep relaxation that can be experienced, massage therapy extends beyond that by incorporating various modalities and techniques that provide a vital component to maintaining and improving an individuals overall wellness. Massage therapy targets improving your body’s circulation so that nutrients and oxygen can move more freely around your cells and allow damaging acidic waste to leave your tissues. Many times an individual’s circulation is impeded through elevated levels of stress, creating tension, physical injury, or difficulties associated with carrying excessive weight. Most importantly, Massage Therapists are licensed practitioners with a comprehensive understanding of human anatomy and physiology. Their practice is governed by the state which also sets a minimum standard for continuing education. For you, this means more knowledge and attention to your individual needs.

As part of the Core, life in balance approach to a healthier lifestyle, massage therapy complements the nutrition and exercise aspects of our client programs. Several of the benefits achieved through our massage therapy services include; improved circulation and immune function, reduced recovery time from exercise or injury, increased flexibility, and improved skin and muscle tone. In addition to these benefits, several other common questions exist related to achieving a healthier lifestyle.

What does stress have to do with weight loss?
An important aspect to understand about stress is that the body cans not differentiate between mental stress and physical stress. Its reaction is essentially the same. Your nervous system becomes highly activated and a host of hormonal changes, such as the release of adrenaline, prepare your body to respond to an emergency. Muscles tense for action, heart rate and blood pressure increase, breathing becomes rapid and shallow, and your digestion and other maintenance functions are put on hold. With out a sense of resolution (knowing that the danger has passed) your body and mind do not receive a clear signal that it is safe to stop, relax and recuperate. With little chance to rest and recover, you may find that your stress leads to a perpetuating cycle in which you become less and less able to unwind. When you are overtaxed and low on energy you are less likely to stay committed to an exercise routine. In addition when your body reacts to stress it directs its energy to the heart, lungs, and extremities and away from digestion. A poor performing digestive system can result in an inadequate absorption of nutrients causing the body to perceive starvation. Your metabolism is impacted and it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain your weight.

Why do I need to incorporate massage therapy into my fitness routine?
The routine of daily living often causes chronic tension in our muscles. When our muscles are exposed to constant tension they can develop tender, tight cords or bands in the muscles. These tender points can cause agonizing incapacitating pain, or the painless restriction of movement and distortion of posture that is commonly overlooked with inactive trigger points. When a new routine is introduced inactive trigger points can become active. Pain and discomfort along with limited range of motion can occur. Many times this can limit or stop our new work out routine. Massage therapy has been proven to be very effective in eliminating trigger points, as well as the soreness we often develop when starting an exercise program. When the pain and soreness is gone and your joints are able to move freely you will be able to enjoy your exercise routine. If you enjoy your work out you are more likely to continue.
